DESCRIPTION: APW - Otay Watch Co, Otay, California, 11J, 18S, gold-filled OF original Keystone HC, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#1371. A good example from this scarce and short-lived southern California maker. The Otay Watch Co. was only in production from May to November of 1890, with a total output of about 1200 watches made. Otay serial numbers began at 1001, and during the course of production a second serial number block was initiated starting at serial number 30001.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, fine scratches to barrel bridge, surface spot at lower-right perimeter of barrel bridge after "California" marking, some mild haze and micro-fine scratches elsewhere; nearly flawless dial with some infinitesimal pinpoint nicks around rim of center hole, some light bits of circular hand rub within seconds-register, some scattered micro-fine scratches, small surface pit under bezel at edge near 8:30 that appears likely an as-made finish imperfection; excellent hands, oxide to portion of minute tip; case shows light to medium wear, scattered shallow dents to rear, two dents to cuvette, reduced engine turning detail, very thin slivers of wear to brass to thin raised ridge adjacent front and rear shoulders, small spot of wear to brass to reverse of pendant at its base; bow pivots semi-freely, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
